Ether prints 2,738 high but sellers fade the breakout

Ether broke to a fresh 2,738 high as the latest twelve-hour candle more than doubled turnover to 3.2 million ETH, closing up at 2,725. The last six hours told a different story, with price fading back toward 2,721 while cumulative delta stayed persistently negative. The breakout bought the highs but has so far been met with distribution rather than follow-through.

ETHUSDT Desk Read — the higher high built on sellers

Angle this run: distribution at the highs. Last cycle framed the tape as a failed extension at 2,707. That ceiling is now gone — price punched through to 2,738 on doubled volume — but the tape underneath the breakout is not confirming it. Every delta print over the last six hours is negative, and cumulative delta has been leaking lower even as price marks new highs. This is a market being sold into strength, not one extending on initiative buying.

The latest candle is a genuine expansion: +26.8 ETH on the close, a 2,738.68 high that clears the prior 2,707 ceiling, and turnover that more than doubled to 3.2 million ETH. On raw prints this is the strongest 12-hour bar of the sequence. The catch is what happened inside it.

The high of 2,738.68 printed at 23:00 and has not been revisited. Since then price has ground sideways-to-lower, closing the 03:00 hour at 2,721.59 — roughly 17 ETH off the top. The second push toward 2,737 at 02:00 also failed to hold, leaving a pair of lower highs against the session peak.

Delta and CVD — the tell

Bucket (UTC)DeltaCVD
Oct 5 02:00-2,55347,314
Oct 5 03:00-12,26639,921

Cumulative delta fell from 47,314 to 39,921 across the last two hours, the single largest negative print of the window at -12,266 in the 03:00 hour. The 15-minute tape is uniformly red: -5,805, -3,092, -3,320 across 03:00–03:30 before stalling near flat into 03:45. Sellers are the aggressors at every step even as price holds the 2,720 area.

Session tone

The story is a divergence: price structure is constructive (higher high, doubled volume), but flow is not. Persistent negative delta and a leaking CVD into fresh highs is the signature of supply absorbing the breakout rather than longs pressing it. The 2,738 print looks like a liquidity sweep that has so far failed to convert into continuation.

  • Holding above 2,716–2,718 keeps the breakout technically alive; a reclaim of 2,738 with positive delta would flip the read back to initiative.
  • Losing 2,716 opens the 2,701–2,690 shelf, where the prior two candles based.
  • The invalidation for the bearish lean is a delta-positive push back through 2,738 — without that, the path of least resistance remains a fade toward the 2,690 shelf.
