Ether fades after 2,742 high, gives back the 2,716 open

Ether pushed to a 2,742 high and closed the prior twelve hours strong at 2,716 on heavy volume. The new window has been a slow give-back, though — price opened at 2,716 and has leaked to 2,672 over the last few hours. Six-hour cumulative delta has unwound from a rich buy-side pile to near-neutral, the telltale of quiet distribution into strength.

ETHUSDT Desk Read — the fresh high that came with a bill

Angle this run: distribution into strength. Last cycle the story was a strong close that ran out of follow-through. This time ETH actually delivered the follow-through first — it drove through the prior shelf to a 2,742 high and closed the completed twelve-hour window up ~29 points at 2,716 on more than five and a half million contracts. That was the convincing part. The problem is what happened next: the new window opened right at 2,716 and has spent the roughly four hours since simply bleeding lower, now sitting near 2,672. The bid that built the leg is no longer standing behind price, and the six-hour delta tape shows the net-buy pile steadily melting away.

The comparison is stark. The completed candle was impulse: a wide range, a higher high at 2,742, and a close near the top of the bar. The current candle is the opposite — it gapped open at the prior close, tagged only 2,722 (roughly 20 points shy of the high), and has since ground down toward its lows. Net is negative and the range is compressing as price coils just above 2,670.

Flow — delta and CVD

6h CVD start (~10:00Z)~16,297
6h CVD peak (~11:00Z)~77,660
6h CVD now~13,962
Net CVD change (6h)−2,335

The six-hour tape is a distribution story. Cumulative delta ballooned to +77,660 near 11:00Z on a monster 51.8k delta bar — real buying that carried the push into the 2,716 close. From there it has done nothing but unwind: aggressive selling printed −16k and −14.6k delta bars at 11:15Z and 12:15Z, and a −12.7k flush at 14:00Z, dragging CVD back to a near-neutral +13,962. Price has drifted lower on every one of those sell-side bursts. This is textbook give-back: the initiative flow that built the high is now absent, and what remains is absorption being worked off.

Session tone

The session reads as weakening after a clean impulse. A strong higher-high close should be defended on retests; instead, the 2,716 open has become resistance rather than support. Turnover is fading into the drift, which is the softer kind of selling — no panic flush, just slow leakage.

  • Short-term bias: down, while price holds below the 2,716 open.
  • First level that matters below: the 2,670 intraday low from the current window.
  • Invalidation for the bearish read: a reclaim of 2,716–2,722 on a positive-delta push would reopen the 2,742 high.

Holding below 2,716 keeps the fade intact; losing 2,670 opens the door to the 2,666 swing. Reclaiming 2,716–2,722 puts the 2,742 high back in play.
